JS continuation tool to thwart movement: BNP

The government is planning to continue the parliament after October 24 to resist the opposition’s movement, Zainul Abdin Farroque, chief whip of the main opposition BNP, said Saturday.
The BNP leader’s comment came a day after the remark of Suranjit Sengupta, an AL advisory council member, saying that there was no confusion that the prime minister and the cabinet would remain in place after October 25 as the parliament would be in place at the time.
“There is no scope of spreading panic over October 24. Whatever BNP now plans will not come true. Parliament will be in place even after October 24,” said Suranjit, a minister without portfolio, on Friday at a discussion in the capital.
“This (plan to continue the parliament) is a conspiracy not only against the opposition political parties but also against the people of the country,” Farroque said at a press briefing at the Jatiya Sangsad Media Centre.
The briefing was organised to counter the remarks of the ruling party leader.
It was earlier decided that the parliament would continue until October 24, Farroque added.
“But it is now unclear why Awami League is trying to continue the House session after October 24,” he said.
Asked whether BNP would resign from the Jatiya Sangsad if the session continues after October 24, the opposition chief whip said his party would decide the matter later.
About reinstating the caretaker government system, Farroque said if the government wants, it will place the bill in the session of October 23 and 24 for the restoration of the CG system.
Some senior AL leaders recently said that to deal with a possible backlash from the opposition, the Awami League will continue parliament session after October 24 on the grounds of public security.
Party insiders said Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had given her consent in this regard.
AL-led grand alliance government will start functioning as the interim government from October 25 as per the current constitutional framework to oversee the next parliamentary polls. The elections will be held 90 days before the expiry of its tenure on January 25.
